Work starts on Central Coast power line betraying residents and environment
Thursday 27 March 2008
Yesterday's construction of the first two poles in Energy Australia's 132 kV power line between Ourimbah and Terrigal has signalled the Iemma government's intention to ignore residents' concerns for their health and the environment, according to Greens NSW MP John Kaye.
Dr Kaye said: "With the first placement of poles in Tumbi Rd, Wamberal, it is now clear that the Iemma government is pushing ahead with a largely overhead line solution to the Central Coast's power needs.
"The decision two weeks ago to underground an additional 750 metres past Wamberal School, while welcome, acknowledged health concerns with magnetic fields from overhead power lines.
"The new feeder will pass within a few metres of the playground of a new childcare centre in Wamberal.
"The Iemma government is failing in its duty to young people by not insisting that Energy Australia practice prudent avoidance.
"Central Coast residents have been betrayed. Their Minister, John Della Bosca, failed to get them the protections enjoyed by Sydney and Newcastle residents where a large proportion of high voltage lines are now underground.
"The Greens hold grave concerns for the future of the Central Coasts' bird life.
"The project's environmental assessment is woefully inadequate. Energy Australia has completely disregarded two international migratory bird treaties by placing the line on the edge of both Terrigal and Wamberal lagoons.
"We have not seen any evidence that the impact of poles and wires on migratory birds has been adequately assessed.
"The Greens call on Energy Minister Ian Macdonald to step in.
"He should direct Energy Australia to install the entire line underground and select a route that does not expose residents to health risks or impact on environmentally sensitive areas.
"Energy Australia has made a short term decision. In the longer term an underground high voltage supply would reduce total costs," said Dr Kaye.
