Wooli residents on front line of climate change
Sunday 05 August 2007
The CSIRO report on climate change impacts on Wooli show that residents are on the front line of climate change, according Greens MP John Kaye.
Responding to a story in today’s newspapers which show that Wooli could expect up to 50% more storm activity and higher sea level rises than previously expected, Dr Kaye encouraged residents to call on Premier Iemma to immediately reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
Dr Kaye said “This is not an abstract issue for Wooli residents. Coastal homes and businesses will bear the brunt of climate change impacts.
“While the Premier talks the talk on climate change, he is refusing to take the issue seriously when it comes to real policy decisions.
“Just last week the Premier distorted a report on electricity requirements to claim the state needs a new gas power station, which would add 3.2 million tonnes of CO2 into the atmosphere every single year.
“This gas power station will swamp the government’s token ‘green’ efforts.
“Wooli residents should be worried that the Premier is willing to compromise their quality of life and put their livelihoods at risk when sensible alternatives exist.
“The NSW government knows that energy efficiency and renewable energy solutions are ready to take the state into a post-carbon future with more jobs. They only need to find the political will,” Dr Kaye said.
