Plebiscite only way to stop Howard’s nuclear push
Monday 20 August 2007
Lake Macquarie could be a principal target for nuclear facilities from a re-elected Howard government. A plebiscite is essential to protecting the safety of the community, according to Greens MP and energy spokesperson John Kaye.
Commenting on the resolution of Lake Macquarie Council, Dr Kaye said, “The council’s determination to give the people a voice is the only way to prevent their district from becoming Australia’s Chernobyl.
“Every town that has access to water, electricity and high voltage transmission infrastructure is a prime candidate for nuclear reactors, uranium enrichment and waste reprocessing.
“It’s time the NSW government stopped shirking their responsibilities and acted to protect the state and its citizens.
“Premier Iemma has been dragging his feet on the issue of nuclear energy. Other states have moved to ensure they do not become Australia’s nuclear heartland.
“NSW risks becoming a prime target of Howard’s nuclear push.
“I have introduced a bill into NSW Parliament to stop nuclear facilities being forced onto the people of NSW.
“A plebiscite is the only way to stop the federal government’s bullyboy tactics,” Dr Kaye said.
