Greenpeace coal power shutdown highlights NSW govt failure

Wednesday 14 November 2007

By shutting down Munmorah power station on the Central Coast, Greenpeace has challenged the Iemma government to recognise the need to phase out coal fired power stations, according to Greens NSW MP John Kaye.

Dr Kaye said: “This state’s dependence on coal to generate electricity is making NSW one of the world’s worst per capita greenhouse gas emitters.

“The Iemma government is waiting until after the federal election to push ahead with a new base load power station and electricity privatisation.

“Instead of increasing emissions, potentially by another 8 millions tonnes of CO2 each year, Premier Morris Iemma should be planning for a low emissions economy that is not dependent on coal.

“By banning the development of new coal-fired power stations and rapidly phasing out the worst of the existing stations, including Munmorah, the NSW government could make a major contribution to the world’s effort to avert a climate catastrophe.

“The recently released Carbon Monitoring for Action database shows Australia’s electricity generators emit more CO2 per capita than any other nation because more than 90% of our electricity comes from burning coal.

“The Iemma government should be acting to reduce this state’s electricity industry emissions, not make them worse.

“Greenpeace’s action shows up NSW’s failure to act on global warming.

“Shutting down Munmorah is a symbolic step towards a future where coal no longer dominates the electricity industry.

“However, the state government is poised to announce a new base load power station, which is very likely to be coal-fired.

“Premier Morris Iemma is waiting until after the federal election so that community anger does not damage Labor’s chances.

“If they are serious about reducing greenhouse gas emissions, the NSW government will abandon plans for a new power station,” Dr Kaye said.
