Anti-abortion message pushed in public schools is attack on rights

Wednesday 30 July 2008

The Iemma government is turning a blind eye to an extremist Protestant group being allowed to push its anti-abortion message in some public school classes, according to Greens NSW MP John Kaye.

Commenting on a report in today's Daily Telegraph ('Church's sex lesson in schools: pushing a pro-life focus' page 13), Dr Kaye said: "The Choice of Life organisation admits it is indoctrinating students as young as eleven against the rights of a woman to terminate a pregnancy.

"The Iemma government is breaching section 30 of the Education Act, which requires public school instruction to be 'strictly non-sectarian and secular'.

"At least three public schools in NSW have handed over entire Personal Development, Health and Physical Eduction (PDHPE) classes to this radical group.

"Despite overwhelming community support for the legal right to access abortion, students at Middleton Public school in Parkes, Chester Hill North Primary and Woy Woy High are being subjected to religiously-motivated anti-choice propaganda.

"The 2003 Australian Survey of Social Attitudes  revealed 81.2 per cent of respondents were pro-choice, agreeing that a 'women should have the right to choose whether or not she has an abortion'.

"This week started with revelations of Hillsong Church teaching make-up to young girls as part of their Shine program in 20 NSW public schools.

"Now the Choice of Life group has been caught pushing its anti-abortion message in PDHPE classes.

"There is an urgent need to regulate groups accessing public school classes.

"Leaving it up to individual schools to determine which group is appropriate is exposing children to damaging and dangerous messages.

"Acting Education Minister John Hatzistergos has done nothing to protect students and their parents from this type of attack. It is time that this important portfolio had a full time minister," Dr Kaye said.
