Renewable Energy

Wind FarmRenewable energy's potential is vast, far greater than that of nuclear power or climate changing coal.
With current renewables technology, we can generate almost six times today's global energy demand (source: International Solar Energy Society). Many countries, like the UK, China, and Egypt, have enough wind power to meet their energy needs many times over. As tidal, wave, solar and bio-mass technologies develop, a diverse renewable energy industry will emerge.

Renewable energy is reliable, clean and limitless power generated by natural forces and processes such as sunshine, wind, flowing water (hydro) and organic materials (bioenergy).

With vast open space and abundant sunshine, Australia has the potential to harness more renewable energy than almost any other country in the world. Enough sunlight falls on Australia each hour to supply all our power needs for a whole year, if we could capture it all!

The Greens NSW are campaigning for a NSW Mandatory Renewable Energy Target of 20% by 2012 and 50% by 2020.

Renewable Energy Bill needs drastic improvements to save it from irrelevanceWind Farm at Sunset

The NSW Government is set to move the Renewable Energy Bill (NSW) 2007, which would create a state renewable energy target. The Greens welcome the move, which comes in the wake of federal government intransigence on this issue. However, the size of the target and other key elements remain woefully inadequate. In particular, the Bill allows renewable energy projects based outside NSW to qualify for the scheme. This will have significant adverse economic and environmental consequences.

John introduces the Climate Futures Bill into Parliament

Today Coal, Tomorrow Solar poster

On 21 June John Kaye introduced the Climate Futures Bil into the Upper House of NSW Parliament, a ground-breaking piece of legislation that, if passed, would place a moratorium on all new coal mines and coal-fired power stations, rapidly increase renewable energy production, and ensure 'just transitions' for affected workers by ensuring they were appropriately retrained into the new, jobs-rich renewable energy industry.
