Coal Power

Coal bannerThe runaway expansion of the coal industry is locking our economy and the environment into an uncertain future. While the rest of the world makes the transition to a low-carbon economy in response to climate change, Australia fails to take real action and remains firmly in the grip of the powerful polluting coal industry.

The Greens NSW are calling on the NSW government to immediately:

  • impose a moratorium on new coal-fired power stations
  • end all coal mining and coal power subsidies and redirect them to clean energy technologies and energy efficiency programs
  • accept that 'clean coal' (carbon capture and storage) is a myth, and stop funding research that could easily be paid for by the already wealthy coal industry

Take Action!

  • Write to Premier Morris Iemma, demanding an end to coal subsidies (including for 'clean coal research'), increased support for renewable technologies that can provide baseload power (eg. geothermal, solar thermal), and a moratorium on new coal-fired power stations.
  • Join the Camp for Climate Action in Newcastle in July, which will shut down the world's largest coal port in a nonviolent protest.

Climate Futures Bill: a missed opportunity for parliament

Today Coal, Tomorrow Solar poster

On 22 February John concluded debate on the Climate Futures Bil into the Upper House of NSW Parliament, a ground-breaking piece of legislation that, if passed, would place a moratorium on all new coal mines and coal-fired power stations, rapidly increase renewable energy production, and ensure 'just transitions' for affected workers by ensuring they were appropriately retrained into the new, jobs-rich renewable energy industry.
